Yeast Infection Remedies For Women

Yeast Infection Remedies, Information and Reviews

Chronic Yeast Infection July 13, 2011

A yeast infection is said to be chronic or recurring when a person has more than four infections in the one year that are not related to antibiotic use.

Vulvo vaginitis may cause a recurrent problem in up to 5% of women.

It is important to get a proper diagnosis as recurrent yeast infections may be symptoms of an underlying medical condition and may require more aggressive treatment.

Recurring yeast infection can put you at risk of other illnesses such as chronic urinary tract infection and diabetes.

Common causes of recurring yeast infection include:

  • Diabetes.
  • A high sugar diet.
  • Birth Control Pills.
  • Certain foods – particularly sugars and sweets.
  • Moisture trapped around the vagina.
  • Changes in the immune system.
  • HIV puts you at higher risk of developing recurring yeast infections.

Diflucan is one of the most common prescriptions for stubborn or recurring yeast infections. If using conventional medicine it is important to also take measures to restore a healthy body ecology, as conventional medicine does not generally do this.

Treatments For Yeast Infection July 11, 2011

Over-the-counter anti-fungal treatments are an option. These include treatments such as:

  • Femstat 3
  • Lotrimin
  • Monistat
  • Terazol 3

Vaginal yeast infection and vulvitis can be treated with topical or oral antifungal medications. Mixed infections with more than one microbe present may need a combination of treatments. Please note that similar symptoms can be caused by infections other than yeast, including chlamydia, gonorrhea and bacterial vaginosis. If symptoms are not eliminated by over-the-counter products, within a week, women should see their doctor for an evaluation.

Since oral antifungal treatments can cause side effects such as headache, nausea and abdominal pain, most doctors may prefer to treat vaginal yeast infections with vaginal tablets or suppositories instead of oral medications. Oral antifungal medications are not recommended during pregnancy.

Antifungal Medications Available as Vaginal Tablets Include:

  • Lotrimin
  • Mycelex
  • Monistat
  • Micatin
  • Terazol
  • Mycostatin

Some women prefer to use home remedies as they claim that over-the-counter and prescription treatments tend to help for only a short period of time and then the yeast infection comes back, and often it is worse!

This is more often true of chronic or recurring yeast infections.

For the average, healthy woman, a non-recurring yeast infection should be cleared up within a week, whether you are using home remedies or over-the-counter treatments. If not, you should see your doctor.
